History

2001
The team was founded in January 2001 by former driver Roberto Ravaglia, a highly accomplished racer with titles including the 1987 WTCC Champion, 1986 and 1988 European Touring Cars Champion, 1989 DTM winner, and three-time Italian Touring Cars Champion—all achieved with BMW. Alongside Aldo Preo, Ravaglia established Ravaglia Motorsport. Competing as BMW Team Germany in the FIA European Championship SuperProduction, they fielded two BMW 320i cars driven by Peter Kox (NL) and Norman Simon (D). Kox secured the championship with three victories, and Simon topped the Under 23 class.
2002
Rebranded as BMW Team Spain, the team entered the FIA European Touring Car Championship (ETCC) with drivers Jordi Gené (E) and Fabrizio de Simone (I) piloting the new BMW 320i racing cars.
2003
Competing in the ETCC as BMW Team Italy-Spain, the team featured drivers Fabrizio Giovanardi (I) and Antonio Garcia (E), who achieved several podium finishes and one pole position. Alessandro Zanardi made a notable comeback, driving a specially modified BMW 320i in the season’s final race at Monza, finishing seventh.
2004
The ETCC season saw the team continuing with drivers Zanardi and Garcia, focusing on developing the BMW 320i with special controls for Zanardi.
2005
Transitioning to the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC), Zanardi achieved a historic victory at Oschersleben (D), and Garcia continued to perform well. Zanardi also won the Italian SuperTouring Cars Championship.
2006
The WTCC campaign included drivers Zanardi, Costa (E), and Duncan Huisman (NL), with Zanardi winning at Istanbul (Turkey) in the new BMW 320si.
2007
In the WTCC, the team fielded Zanardi and Felix Porteiro (E). Porteiro secured a win at Brno circuit (CZ), with Zanardi finishing third.
2008
The WTCC season saw Zanardi and Porteiro delivering a one-two finish in race 1 at Brno circuit (CZ). Zanardi narrowly missed a win in the second race and earned his first WTCC pole in qualifying. Porteiro also won at Oschersleben (D). ROAL Motorsport developed the BMW M3 for the Superstars Series, where Luca Rangoni (IT) won his debut race.
2009
Competing as BMW Team Italy-Spain-ROAL Motorsport in the WTCC, Zanardi and Sergio Hernandez (E) won both races at Brno circuit (CZ). In the Superstars International Series, Gianni Morbidelli (IT) claimed the championship in a BMW M3 sedan by ROAL Motorsport.
2010
Under the name BMW Team Italia, the Superstars International Series saw the new BMW M3 coupé, with Thomas Biagi securing both the International and Italian titles. ROAL Motorsport achieved six victories.
2011
Returning to the WTCC with the new BMW 320TC, Tom Coronel (NL) won at Suzuka (J) and finished fourth in the championship. Alberto Cerqui (IT) became the Champion in the Superstars Italian Series, driving a BMW M3.
2012
The team introduced the BMW Z4 GT3 in the Italian GT Championship as BMW Team Italia. Drivers Stefano Colombo (IT) and Thomas Biagi (IT) won the title, securing five victories and five pole positions. In the WTCC, Tom Coronel (NL) and Alberto Cerqui (IT) consistently finished in the top ten with their BMW 320TC.
2013
BMW Team Italia won the Team title in the Italian GT Championship with drivers Michela Cerruti, Stefano Colombo, and Stefano Comandini, achieving three wins with the BMW Z4 GT3. In the WTCC, Tom Coronel (NL) secured two victories driving a BMW 320TC.
